Vice Jakarta Governor Basuki T Purnama kept his promise to use City Bus Integrated with TransJakarta Bus (BKTB) from his residence in Pantai Mutiara, Pluit, North Jakarta, to the City Hall on Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta. Wearing brown batik shirt, Basuki arrived at City Hall at around 8.30 AM.
“I’m campaigning (Jakarta Provincial Government’s policy to use public transport on Friday), so it’s okay (to be late). But, it is more efficient using private vehicle because the trip would only be 25 minutes and I can also have breakfast on my way to office. If taking bus, the trip is almost an hour,” he stated, Friday (2/7).
Even so, Basuki stated his willingness to use BKTB from his residence to City Hall if TransJakarta bus lanes sterile from other vehicles.
“The problem is traffic congestion, that’s for sure. So if TransJakarta bus lanes were sterile, people would shift (from driving private vehicles to take public transport) because they saw the bus lanes were smooth. This is because time is money for Jakartans,” he said.
In the future, BKTB is targeting to have new routes to higher class residences, such as Green Garden, Sunter, and Kalibata. Moreover, BKTB will also integrate with public facilities like offices, shopping centers, and train stations.
“The key is jemput bola (taking the initiative to visit consumers), how to get into high class residences. Besides that, we’re also going to cooperate with buildings, malls, and train stations, so APTB can get in there,” he disclosed.
By having BKTB reach into shopping centers, Basuki continued, it is expected that residents whose houses far from BKTB access to park their vehicles and then shift. So does with train passengers, they are expected to directly access BKTB once it is integrated with train stations.
“Public transport is indeed cannot compete the privacy and convenience of private vehicles. But like in Bogota, Colombia, if traffic on public road lanes congested and busway lanes sterile, public transport will be faster. But if now we built two (TransJakarta bus) lanes, just like in Sudirman, the public will curse at us. At this time, they think that TransJakarta bus lanes are taking public lanes,” he uttered.
In order to overcome current situation, the sterilization of TransJakarta bus lanes is the most relevant solution to invite people to use public transport. Along with this effort, Basuki admitted that he will coordinate again with the police.
“If in Bogota the Transportation Department gives tickets, here the party authorized is only the police. I will talk again to (Jakarta Police) Traffic Directorate, so TransJakarta bus lanes can only be dedicated for TransJakarta bus,” he finished.
