If usually ondel-ondel (giant Betawi traditional puppet) only has traditional look, now Jakarta Governor Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo asks the involvement of senior high school (SMA) students to make the modern ones which currently hyped by youngsters to be featured in Jakarnaval event.
Jokowi deliberately instructed the students to make modern ondel-ondel. By so, it is expected the next young generations would love more Betawi culture, especially ondel-ondel.
“The ondel-ondel will have many versions, including the original one. All participants have prepped this since four months ago. I’m surprised seeing their own creations which turned out good. The countries abroad have Pasadena and Rio Carnivals that have reached international renown, why can’t we have our own better. I’m sure we can do it, but it takes time,” uttered Jokowi, Tuesday (6/18).
According to him, the materials used by the students to make modern ondel-ondel are environmentally friendly. In the future, Jakarnaval event will be tailored to the theme, which is associated with Betawi cultures, such as the gambang kromong music, tanjidor, etc.
“The different thing this year is that Jakarta residents will be involved in order to create activeness, creativeness, and innovations. The carnivals back then were wholly organized. Now, we ask for students’ involvement in the process,” stated Jokowi.
The 2013 Jakarnaval will be participated by 1,500 participants from various cities in Indonesia, namely Magelang, Jember, Subang, Kalimantan, and Banyumas. The event is slated to be held on June 30, where groups will parade starting from the courtyard of the City Hall until HI Roundabout.
