Pandapotan Manurung (41), a citizen of Jl. Pancawardi RT 05/11, Kayuputih Urban Village, Pulogadung Sub-District filed a police report for the doctor of Persahabatan General Hospital (RSUP) to Jakarta City Police, because of alleged malpractice, after his wife died under the care of the doctor.
Ana Marlina Simanungkalit (38) died at Persahabatan General Hospital on March 23, 2013 in ICU. "I shall find my justice, so what had happened to my wife would not be repeated to others ever again," told Manurung, Tuesday (4/23).
He came to Jakarta City Police to report the case with the No. LP/1316/IV/2013/PMJ/Dit Reskrimum dated April 22, 2013. "The reported here is Dr. Budi Harapan Siregar, with Persahabatan General Hospital as the crime scene. The victim is my own wife, Ana Marlina Simanungkalit and the reported is being charged with Article 359 complemented with 361 Criminal Code about Fatal Negligence," he told.
The case began when his wife found a lump at the back of her throat, which was painful when she swallow her food. Then, his wife was brought to Persahabatan General Hospital. By the hospital attendant, they were directed to Surgery Wing. "We came to the hospital on February 20, 2013," Manurung informed.
In Surgery Wing, he met with Dr. Budi Harapan Siregar who proceeded to examine his wife. The doctor declared that his wife suffered from thyroid and it must be lifted through surgery.
The doctor vehemently insisted for operation procedure to be conducted, otherwise the lump might develop into cancer and spread to other organs such as lungs and will reduce other body function. The doctor then referred preliminary examinations for lungs, heart, kidney and ultrasonography.
On March 6 2013, he and his wife returned to Persahabatan General Hospital and saw Dr. Budi again bringing along the result of the preliminary examinations. The result showed that everything was normal and they can proceed with the surgery.
On Monday morning (3/11) when Pandopotan was proposing the Jakarta Health Card (KJS), the victim asked him to come to the room of Central Surgical Installation (IBS) for surgical removal of the thyroid. After arriving in IBS room, he saw the doctor did the surgical removal of the thyroid to his wife. Without being given any explanation, he was given a bottle containing meat and fluid assumed as the thyroid to be checked at the laboratory.
The next day on March 12, the victim often felt pain and Pandapotan then asks the doctor to give pain relievers drugs to his wife, where doctors assessed that it is an effect of pain postoperatively. In the afternoon, he once again asked Dr. Budi to meet his wife. Unluckily the nurses answered that the doctor was busy.
The next day again around 7 AM, Dr. Budi finally met the victim and diagnose its pain caused by a blood clot that closes the thyroid tracts which were removed before. To clean it, the surgery should be conducted to her.
Then, the doctor told the victim that her thyroid gland has become malignant cancer and has churned respiratory and its digestive. “Dr. Budi always changes his explanations. Initially he told the digestive tract has been broken, but then it was torn. Even, he suggested my wife should be treated at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital if my wife condition is stable,” explained Pandapotan.
To avoid unwanted things, Pandapotan finally brought her wife to the room of Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Then on March 15, 2013, he exclaimed there was a meeting between big families with 8 doctors of Persahabatan General Hospital. During the meeting, one person asks whether the hospital is able to handle the patient. But hospital side answered that the victim could not be rushed to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital because of patient is in a critical condition. Furthermore Pandapotan asks the hospital’s commitment to make him sure, and at that time the hospital promised to bring doctors from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.
While the patient in the ICU has a high fever. Pandapotan also asked about his wife disease. According to the doctor, the patient suffered diabetes disease.
On March 23, Dr. Budi came again to replace the patient’s bandage on the neck and told Pandapotan that his wife will be installed a hose up to the stomach to supply food. Not long after, his wife started shivering with a high temperature. Immediately, the doctor gave drugs to lower the patient’s body temperature. Ironically the patient felt a seizure until she died around 2 PM.
When being confirmed about such tragedy, Vice Head of Persahabatan General Hospital’s Public Relation, Dr. Royen was not ready to give explanation. “We have not been able to make a statement and are still waiting for hospital head direction,” he finished.
